Game Overview

This game focuses on the use of swarms for protection. The outline Flora pitched to Jacob and I goes as follows:

The player-character is a small robot living in a science lab on the sea-floor. The world is set many years in the future, post climate catastrophy. It is the characters mission to reach the peak of a mountain to broadcast a signal letting humans know that the world is safe to return to. The journey is dangerous however, as predators seek to eat and destroy your robot. To overcome this obsticle your robot will morph into an animal matching the environment it is currently in, and form a swarm to protect itself and progress to the next area. Once this is done the swarm disperses, and the gameplay loop repeats.

Key Features

The first thing we did as a team was sit down and discuss the key componants of the game, and the things we wanted for it. These are in the below list:

  • 2.5D Game

    • The camera is fixed like a side-scroller, but the game-world is 3D​

      • The player can interact with certain objects to delve further back into the level​

    • Third person, semi disconnected camera

  • PC game

    • Unity game engine

  • Win condition: Reach the top of the mountain

  • The phases

    • Sea - Sunken city potentially as a setting

    • Sky - Avoid high rising obsticles such as trees and cliffs

    • Mountain - Start in a wooded area and climb your way up

  • Artstyle: TO BE DECIDED

  • Core asthetic focus: Swarm/creature movement

  • Mechcanics: Move, collect swarm, move into "barriers"

  • Sound design: To be discussed, dynamic soundtrack (edited)

    • Each level has music that matches its theme, that gets more dramatic as the swarm grows or in proximity to the predator ​

  • Visual design: Focus on simple shapes to see from a long distance

    • Low poly artstyle​

  • Key experience: Able to explore a gather a swarm, avoiding dangers in the meantime when you are alone

  • Character design: Robot, one aquatic based, one air based, one mountain based

    • Some kind of fish that forms a shoal​

    • Small flocking bird

    • Non-predatory land mammal

  • Level design: Between real and fantastical, "post apocalyptic" design

    • Will experiment with art styles and settings in the future​
