Notion Contributions

Our project proposals have to be submitted in the form of a Notion document. Each member of our team has contributed to different elements of the proposal, and I have pasted my contributions below.

Critical Analysis

The key theme of our game is "Swarms", which is an umbrella term for, but not limited to: flocks, shoals, and herds. We aim to display swarm behaviours and the key reasoning for them, which is survival. Animals that swarm tend to be "prey" animals, such as smaller birds, fish, insects, and passive mammals. Science has recently found that these swarms form as a way of confusing predators, as well as making the collective look more threatening and decreasing their chances of being hunted. (Olson, R., et. al, (2013))

It has also been found that swarms form for migration purposes, with birds and insects utilising it as a method of keeping members of a flock or colony together. We hope to display this both in the predators the player faces, as well as the journey itself. One represents the reliance on a swarm for survival and progression, while the other demonstrates migration patterns that swarms form to undertake.

(Game Title) is a single-player exploration-adventure collect-a-thon, with a low poly art style. This was after much deliberation about potential mechanics and artistic aesthetics. We wanted the game to be single-player so that the player could experience building and heading the swarm. Additionally, we feel that low poly would not only be a good way to have a distinctive and consistent art style but also allow the player to focus on the swarm building mechanic. Many games developers feel similar when it comes to low poly (https://www.gamedeveloper.com/art/why-are-so-many-devs-employing-a-retro-low-poly-mid-1990s-aesthetic-).

The exploration-adventure aspect comes from our want to have the player explore the environment while on their journey, and add a layer to the immersion. With our low poly art style we hope to create a pleasing aesthetic for the player to observe while playing the game.

Functional Specifics

Our game is made up of large, distinctive 3D environments. Additionally, the formation of the swarms themselves we anticipate to be quite demanding to process. There will be a significant number of assets loaded into the game at any given time, which will require a relatively high-end machine to run.

Average recommended specifications for gaming:

  • Operating System: Windows 10

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 / AMD Ryzen 5

  • Memory: 8 GB RAM

  • A dedicated graphics card (Geforce GTX 1060 or equivalent)

This will be subject to future testing and optimisation on different systems including desktops and laptops. We also aim to test on both Windows and Mac.

Goals

(Personal Goals) - To become accomplished in 3d modelling and animation techniques, as well as becoming more refined when using Blender and Unity
