Week 1 - Launch (Notes)
Year 3 Launch/Tutorial Day 1 - 05/10/21
Develop LinkedIn, Make professional Twitter, Make Portfolio
“Important to find the right person with the wrong skills than the wrong person with the right skills” - Don’t have to know everything, learn as I go
Don't think about job roles
Critical Thinking is important for different perspectives
What do I desire? What do I want to do in life?
-
Start with having a good working environment - a place to focus and do critical thinking. Spur each other on
Find an intersection between what I’m good at, what I enjoy, and what has value
Value = Things that will have an impact on the world
The Brief
-
Two phases: Research and Create phase split into two smaller phases each
-
Presenting every couple of weeks, with each phase taking a specific number of weeks
-
2, 2, 3, 3 weeks (10 weeks?)
-
-
Phase 1: Research as many things as I can, come up with 4 research themes and present to the class (7 or 8 minutes) to convince people that it’s interesting. Pick one after the presentations.
-
Phase 2: Research one of these themes and explore it further, gather as much information as possible and present it again (more concise but similar to the first presentation)
-
Phase 3: Start thinking about how to gamify this theme. Choose 3 of many game ideas about this theme, prototypes would be ideal. Present these
-
Phase 4: Explore final idea further, structure it out (Like a GDD but NOT A GDD), Start thinking about teams around the end of phase 2. Work collectively after whatever point I join a team
-

Tips
"Don't be scared to bin stuff or change your idea, don't drive yourself into the ground. You're more than your work"
"Talk to your peers. Let yourself get relaxed and distracted. Eat well, have snacks, don't start antidepressants halfway through the semester"
"Don't be afraid to stand up for something you know can work, it's okay to doubt yourself"
"Have fun, cry if you need to"
"Network, network, network"
"Speak to other years and alumni. All in the same boat"
"Forget that you're making a game, expand your research and find topics that you enjoy"
"Have a proper schedule and timetable. Think of short term goals to keep motivated. Use Trello"
“Look after each other”
“Think about making something unique, memorable and meaningful”
“Try to give your game an identity”
“Base the game on something you’re actually interested in and know about”
“Learn how to gamify your idea as quickly as possible. Alter the design plan if needed”
Afternoon workshop
“Short trip” - Born out of the excitement of travelling on Japanese trams, and also the technical challenge of making a game with this specific art style (line art)
Before your eyes - Game that progresses as you blink (really interesting detection mechanic) About memory and time and space
About finding a scope and being passionate

Task (20 mins)(Explained below)

UN list of 22 global issues
UN sustainable development goals
Make an action plan to take it forward - list what I want to find out and how much information I would want to have in the next few days
Action Plan:
Make mind maps of potential ideas, and choose 4
Write questions about the 4 topics
Research the answers and see where the information takes me
Make inspiration/moodboards
Experiment with experiences for the different themes
Task:
Make a mindmap in pairs or threes about:
What makes you cry
What makes you laugh
What gets you excited
What gets you angry
What stimulates you mentally
What interests you

I did this task with two other people. I found it interesting discovering the rest of the classes responses to the questions, as well as some of the answers I found myself giving. For example, my group took the time to have a discussion whilst making the interests mindmap about the different things we enjoy, why, and why we haven't already expanded our knowledge of them further.

We then had to walk around the room and select points from different mindmaps and ask questions about them. These kinds of questions will be the stepping stone into our research. I will definitely be using these activities to help me choose my four topics for Phase 1 of this project.
